The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (COE) is proposing to modify and replace the existing SPGP (12-SPGP-01) which will expire on May 31, 2017. On April 13, 2017, the COE Norfolk District released the draft 2017 SPGP (17-SPGP-01) for public comment. Several noteworthy changes have been made to the SPGP, intended to expedite review of the permit application and in response to public inquiries.
Submerged Aquatic Vegetation Survey Window is Approaching
If you are undertaking a project that will impact tidal waters, you will likely be required to undertake surveys to document the presence or absence of submerged aquatic vegetation (SAV) within your project area. Example projects include boat piers/docks, marinas, and channel dredging operations.
It's Almost Pogonia Season!
Summer is on its way and Wetland Studies and Solutions, Inc. (WSSI) is gearing up for another season of small whorled pogonia (Isotria medeoloides) surveys. If you are planning to develop property in Virginia that has mature hardwood forest with an open understory, your site may need a survey for the small whorled pogonia. The field survey "window" for the small whorled pogonia is narrow; searches can only be conducted June 1 – July 20 in northern Virginia and May 25 – July 15 in southern Virginia (south of Caroline County). Schedule now and avoid critical delays in obtaining your wetlands permit.
