Wetland Studies and Solutions, Inc. (WSSI) has an immediate need for a Staff Accountant & Billing Specialist. The successful candidate will work both independently and as part of a team by assisting the other members of WSSI’s accounting department including the Controller. Wetland Studies and Solutions, Inc. (WSSI) is seeking an Accounting Intern for summer 2022. The successful candidate will have the opportunity to apply the principles you’ve been learning in school and work alongside experienced accountants on a team that supports over 600 engineers, scientists, arborists, archeologists, surveyors, and more as we work to balance environmental protection and land use goals. If you’re an accountant who loves the environment, this is the internship for you! Learn our day-to-day accounting tasks and become familiar with the different services provided at WSSI. The Accounting Intern will shadow members of the department on their daily tasks and will assist with accounts payable and accounts receivable, billing and invoicing, data entry, report preparation, and more.

Applicants should possess a strong work ethic with the desire to gain experience in different aspects of accounting at an environmental consulting firm. Ideal candidate will be currently enrolled in an undergraduate business or accounting program and have completed at least two semesters including introductory accounting coursework. WSSI is seeking a mid-level to senior level Site/Civil Design Engineer for our Richmond, VA office. The Site/Civil Design Engineer will develop plans, perform design calculations, and assist Team Lead with a variety of site/civil land development engineering projects in the Higher Education and Energy sectors. The Site/Civil Design Engineer will develop grading plans, erosion control plans, stormwater management plans and stormwater pollution prevention plans.

Responsibilities

  • Provide technical expertise in site/civil design, hydrology/hydraulics, erosion and sedimentation control, and stormwater management

  • Design and create site layout plans in alignment with client requirements and WSSI standards

  • Utilize AutoCAD Civil 3D to develop concept plans, grading plans, and site designs

  • Collaborate with team members to ensure project objectives (scope, schedule, deliverables) are met in accordance with established metrics

  • Coordinate permitting with Counties and local municipalities

Requirements

  • PE Preferred

  • Bachelor’s degree in, civil engineering or related field

  • Minimum of 4-10 years Site/Civil Design experience

  • Prior exposure to Higher Education and/or Energy sectors is ideal

  • Proven experience with Virginia codes and regulations, interpreting plans, designing storm water facilities, site grading and permitting for land disturbance

Projects include providing environmental compliance services associated with construction of data centers, residential developments, commercial properties, utility, and transportation development.

Primary Duties

  • Environmental compliance inspections and reporting

  • Stormwater Pollution Prevention Plan (SWPPP) development and auditing

  • Coordinating with federal and state resource agencies with regard to wetlands, erosion and sediment control and stormwater compliance

  • Best Management Practices (BMP) construction monitoring

  • Virginia Water Protection (VWP) construction monitoring

Minimum Requirements

Thunderbird Archeology, a division of WSSI, is seeking qualified applicants to fill a full-time permanent Field Supervisor Archeologist  position in our Gainesville, Virginia. The pay rate for this position is competitive and dependent on experience with opportunities for advancement.

Responsibilities will include

  • Management of archeological fieldwork including Phase I, II, and III excavations, archeological cemetery delineations, and archeological recovery of human remains,

  • Ensuring work quality and adherence to schedule and budget for diverse archeological projects from field survey to report production,

  • Preparation of draft plans and reports,

  • Conducting archeological research,

  • Assisting with proposals and interacting with clients, agency staff, and contractors.

Minimum qualifications include

Thunderbird Archeology, a division of WSSI, is seeking Archeological Field Technicians for immediate temporary, project-based, full-time employment.

Responsibilities will include

  • Participating in archeological survey, excavations and laboratory work under the direction of staff archeologists;

  • Artifact identification and processing;

  • Preparing accurate field notes and documentation;

  • Interpretation of soil strata, preparation of field maps depicting the locations of excavations, site/feature boundaries, historic standing structures, and other notable features within the project area.

Minimum qualifications include

  • A Bachelor's degree in Archeology or a closely related field and successful completion of an archeological field school or at least three months of field experience;

WSSI is seeking a full-time junior to mid-level Environmental Scientist to join the team in our Gainesville, Virginia office. We are looking for a motivated team player who will provide field support to and serve as a task manager on the Environmental Site Assessment and Remediation Team.

Essential Job Functions

Responsibilities will include performing field activities (i.e., site visits), task management, analysis and interpretation of analytical results and field-collected data, working on assignments with project managers and fellow team members, coordinating with various subject matter experts, and communication with local, state, and federal regulatory agencies. Excellent oral and written communication skills and the ability to handle multiple project assignments and deadlines are a must. 

Primary activities will include preparation of Phase I and Phase II Environmental Site Assessments; conducting soil, groundwater, air, and surface water sampling; logging soil borings, oversight of groundwater monitoring well installations, and collection of representative subsurface media samples; oversight of site redevelopment and remediation activities; and analysis and interpretation of analytical results and the preparation of summary reports, under the supervision of a Senior Environmental Professional.

Project meetings, fieldwork, site visits, and professional development assignments will routinely require overnight stays throughout the region. It is estimated that this position will consist of approximately 50% office work and 50% field work.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Considerable field experience and excellent writing skills. Experience with data collection, presentation, reduction, and evaluation, and writing technical reports a must. Candidate must demonstrate ability to prepare professional documents that are technically and grammatically correct.

  • Prefer a working knowledge of state and federal regulations in the area of environmental compliance, and experience in the practical application of ASTM standards as they relate to environmental site assessments.

  • Ability to take initiative and resolve problems with a team building mentality.

  • Ability to develop and maintain positive interpersonal relationships with WSSI personnel at all levels.

  • Must maintain a valid driver’s license and ability to operate company vehicles.

Required

  • A Bachelor's Degree in Environmental Science, Environmental Engineering or similar engineering discipline, Geology, Hydrogeology or other closely related field

  • A minimum of one to five years of experience in environmental compliance, assessment, and remediation

WSSI is looking for an experienced Survey Party Chief to join our Gainesville, Virginia team.  The ideal candidate will have at least three years of experience in field surveying practices and techniques, as well as experience leading a field survey crew.

Job Duties

Primary responsibilities of the position include leading a field crew, keeping accurate notes and sketches, coordinating projects and managing associated data, establishing site control, and maintaining client relationships. Projects include topography, construction stake-out and as-builts, bathymetric surveys, and wetland and stream surveys

Candidate must be able to perform in a fast-paced environment with quick turnarounds, be able to problem solve and communicate effectively, and be willing to learn and take on new tasks.

Qualifications

Required

  • 3+ years of progressive field surveying experience

  • Extensive experience with modern survey methods and equipment

  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite, including Word, Excel, and Outlook

  • Ability to prioritize and multi-task with respect to projects on a daily basis

  • Ability to allocate time and resources appropriately to meet project deadlines
